Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto pushed domestic manufacturers to scale up national electric motorcycle production to two million units, as part of broader efforts to accelerate the green energy transition.

Speaking at the launch of the national electric motorcycle (Molinas) and its supporting ecosystem in Cikarang, West Java, on Thursday, President praised initial progress while laying down a bold challenge for the industry's next phase of growth.

While commending the local manufacturer Indika Energy Group for successfully producing 20,000 electric motorcycles to date, Prabowo emphasized the need to expand production capacity significantly to meet growing national demand.

"Today, the Indika Group has successfully produced 20,000 motorcycles. I told the Indika Energy Group that if you reach 200,000, I will come again; if you reach two million, I will come again," Prabowo remarked.

To support this ambitious expansion target, Prabowo urged all relevant stakeholders, including the sovereign investment agency BPI Danantara, to provide strong funding and infrastructural backing to solidify the national electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

Furthermore, the government is preparing consumer-centric financing schemes to boost public interest in EV adoption.

According to Prabowo, these policies will focus on lowering interest rates on installments and exploring zero-down-payment options for prospective buyers.

"We will reduce interest rates on installments for the people. We will also try to eliminate down payments," he noted.

Beyond reducing the upfront financial burden, the President highlighted that switching to electric motorcycles offers substantial operational savings, cutting daily mobility expenses by 50 to 70 percent compared with conventional fuel-powered motorcycles.

To further ease the transition for existing gasoline motorcycle owners, the government is currently reviewing a trade-in program. Under the scheme, owners could exchange their old gasoline-powered motorcycles for new electric models by paying a minimal fee.

President Prabowo emphasized that accelerating the domestic EV transition is vital for Indonesia to remain competitive in an evolving international landscape shaped by carbon taxes and urban emissions restrictions, citing cities such as Beijing as examples of future urban traffic management.
