The development of the Trans Sumatra Railway is expected to strengthen regional connectivity by creating integrated transportation hubs that support sustainable public mobility, as stated by an official from the Transportation Ministry.

"Yes, the development can be well-integrated, safe, and comfortable," the ministry's Director General of Transportation and Multimodal Integration, Risal Wasal, remarked on Tuesday.

Wasal said the Trans Sumatra Railway development prioritizes integrated transportation hubs with strong intermodal connectivity.

He added that the Ministry of Transportation is focusing not on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) areas, but on developing transport hubs that are safe, comfortable, and easily accessible to the public.

According to him, the Trans Sumatra Railway will feature transportation hubs with models adapted to regional characteristics and service requirements across Sumatra.

The hubs are expected to enhance intermodal connectivity, making passenger and cargo transport more efficient and improving links between regions.

Previously, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that the Trans Sumatra Railway project from Banda Aceh to Bandar Lampung will not rely on the State Budget (APBN).

The government is exploring various alternative financing schemes to support the accelerated development of the railway network.

The Trans Sumatra railway project is part of President Prabowo Subianto's directive to strengthen the railway network outside Java, particularly to support more efficient logistics transportation and thus support national economic growth.

The government has formed a special team to review the development of the railway network, which is approximately 1,700 kilometers (km) long, connecting Banda Aceh to Bandar Lampung.

President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia, Bobby Rasyidin, ensured that his office would immediately conduct a review of the railway development project with the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Danantara, and the Ministry of Transportation.

The project's funding requirement is estimated at around US$25 billion (approximately Rp350 trillion).

Currently, the existing railway network in Sumatra is still not fully interconnected. KAI has therefore made the Banda Aceh–Besitang line a priority in the first phase of the Trans Sumatra Railway project.
